Two Types of Residences

It has long been the philosophy of CLC to create small individualized homes specifically designed to meet the needs and wishes of its consumers.  In planning a residence for a specific person we look carefully at all of the individual’s needs, aspirations and skills in a variety of areas.

“One size fits all” has never been part of CLC’s thinking when it comes to trying to figure out the best possible arrangement for someone with a disability.  For instance, a recreational activity as simple as going fishing might be absolutely wonderful for one person and sheer torture for another.  If someone wants to see a sci-fi movie we believe that they should be able to do so – and not be molded into the group’s choice of another type of movie.

Broadly defined, CLC residences can be delineated into two categories, Supervised and Supported.  A Supported Home provides oversight and staffing only during those hours when a specific need is present.  A Supervised Home provides oversight and staffing 24 hours per day and is usually necessary to insure the individual’s health and safety.  Medical conditions such as diabetes, seizure disorders or ambulatory difficulties often dictate the need for 24 hour staffing.

The type of physical structure is not related to the program type.  Parents and advocates often ask about “apartments” or “houses” .  A traditional apartment may have 24 hour supervision – a typical single family house may be a supported site.  The type of program is determined by the individual’s needs, not the construction of the building.
