Specialty Programs: Prader-Willi Syndrome
Community Living Corporation (CLC) has operated a program for adults with Prader –Willi Syndrome since 1991. Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a complex genetic disorder often resulting in some degree of cognitive impairment, a collection of unique physical characteristics, specific health care issues and an often challenging behavioral profile. PWS is perhaps best known because of its creation of an insatiable appetite and the capacity to gain weight on remarkably lean diets. Left unchecked, PWS is a life threatening disorder due to the health complications of obesity. PWS requires support and supervision throughout the entire life span.
CLC provides an individualized program for 10 adults with PWS. Each person participates in the development of his/her program goals and is carefully supervised for dietary compliance as well as all health issues. Eight of the ten individuals in this program have been with CLC for over 16 years.
Our residential program consists of two single family homes, both located in Northern Westchester County. Each house is home to five adults with PWS.
The CLC program works closely with the families of its consumers and has been an active participant in the state and national level PWS advocacy organizations. The staff and management of the PWS attend and have been invited to speak at the New York State PWS Alliance conference held each year.
